"You aren't a wee Eevee anymore, Na'au." The man grumbles, albeit with a rather soft tone. What should have been free hands to hold onto freshly madechurros are now arms burdened with patting a Sylveon far too big to be lazing on his lap. And yet, he cannot ignore the whines of his childhood companion, nor the tears she threatens to shed if he doesn't grant her this precious moment in time.[break][break]

That, and the rather alarming rate at which his churros are being consumed. He's quick enough to grab a piece before his Umbreon eats it all, shooting her a stinkeye which she promptly returns with a prominent 'blep'.[break][break]

"And you, miss greedy butt, are going to get us more churros."[break][break]

Despite the cries of protest, Emmett is quick to smile whilst pointing at the larger troublemaker of the two.[break][break]

"You know I ain't moving."[break][break]

Mahina scoffs, blowing a raspberry at her sister as she hops to her feet. Then she'll grab a few notes from his hand, trotting over to the food stand with nothing but complaints huffed under her breath. When she gets right up to the counter, she's jumping up, resting her front paws on the desk as she vaguely gestures towards the churros on the menu.[break][break]

Any strange looks from the cashier are met with a glare, the money exchanged quickly for fear of any fingers being bitten right off. Then comes the wait, the Umbreon shuffling out of the way whilst the kitchen handles her order. And she'll bide her time by looking around, staring a little too hard at times as she works on memorising the face of various strangers.

He'd swung from climbing rope to climbing rope, Vivi's psychic powers bringing them closer whenever he was about to miss. He scaled towering walls and ran through gauntlets of nerf and water guns. He walked through the spinning tunnel of disorientation while, against all odds, not losing his lunch. A final dive into a pit of endless foam brought it all full circle.[break][break]

Isaac was the first to pop his head out. After him came Ivan, the Jolteon letting out a series of triumphant yips. Eve was next, the Eevee quick to follow in her father's footsteps. Finally came Vivi, the Espeon having to fish Evan the Flareon out from the foam before he fell asleep under it all.[break][break]

Vee Force Five had conquered the Joyland arena.[break][break]

The second he was out from the foam, Ivan pancaked onto the ground. His energy gone and his pride immense, he began whining for some sort of snack as a reward for a job well done. Vivi, seeing how he hungered, tried to scamper off to go grab some for him. It was a good thing her little-big brother could snag her by the collar before she ran off![break][break]

"Oi, oi, Eve," Isaac said, barely able to contain his amusement. "You can't just go get churros yourself! You're a Pokemon, silly."[break][break]

The pointing of Vivi's tails, and the mischievous giggle on her face, caught Isaac's eye. Confused, he followed where she was looking; apparently, churro stands did accept Eevee customers! Isaac did a double take as he saw an Umbreon staring towards the stand with intent.[break][break]

Pandora's box had opened up. Eve charged off. Evan followed. Even Ivan, who had apparently been feigning distress like a lazy bones, charged after them. Only Vivi remained, amusement twinkling in her big, soulful eyes. "You four are gonna be the death of me," Isaac said, a wry smile on his face. "C'mon. Lets eat."

Whilst listening to the crowd and keeping an eye out on the kitchen, Mahina finds their attention stolen away by the rambunctious presence of other Eeveelutions. At first, she chooses to stay out of their way, scrunching her nose as she looks around for whoever their trainer may be. And when she lays eyes upon that unfortunate soul, she huffs, turning her nose up at him and all of his little hooligang.[break][break]

It's only when she hears an ever-familiar pip that her expression softens, a momentary change that quickly twists into a scowl as a ribbon wraps around her forelimb. Na'au follows up quick, rubbing her cheeks against the Umbreon's with a purr. And as Emmett joins them, only to laugh at her predicament, she makes sure that he understands the full extent of her wrath as she sharply slaps his shin.[break][break]

"Ow! Okay, okay!" Raising his hands in surrender, he backs away right as a chef calls out a certain Umbreon's order. Snapping it up posthaste, he'll offer the box to Na'au before Mahina takes it all, watching as the cheery Sylveon grabs a few and begins munching on one. As for the other churros, she'll dare to sidle up to the little Eevee and offer it with a chirp.[break][break]

"Woah there, Na'au." He almost feels bad stopping her with how pure her intentions are, but he'll nudge his head towards Isaac Merlo. "Should probably check if their trainer is cool with that."[break][break]

To which the Sylveon whines, looking to @isaacmero with those puppy-dog eyes as she waves the churros before Eve's eyes. Sighing, Emmett mirrors her look with marginally less effort.[break][break]

"Well... If that's okay with you?"

[attr="class","skullbody"]The Umbreon thought little of the group's presence. Their far more affectionate cousin was a different story. The Sylveon snuggled its grumpy partner into submission, then trotted over to offer a few churros from the box towards the baby of the group.[break][break]

Their trainer had a good point about consent. However, in the light of the big, sad, wet eyes Isaac was getting hit by on all sides, did that even matter. It was bad enough that Eve joined the begging. It was worse that her entire clan came to back her up, looking like the world's saddest family portrai.[break][break]

"Do I really look like I have a choice?" Isaac's voice was as dry as a biscuit in the desert.[break][break]

Eve took her victory, happily munching down on the offered churro. The others, emboldened, eagerly waited in line as Isaac went buying. "Thanks for the offer, by the way," Isaac said as he waited. "You've got some kind Pokemon."

"No, but I figured giving you the illusion of having one would make it hurt less." He smiles, waving Na'au onwards as she begins cooing over the Eevee. "Kind though?"[break][break]

He sneaks a glance at the two princesses, wincing as Mahina slaps his shin once more.[break][break]

"One is spoiled and the other is going through some rebellious phase." The pain will not stop him from speaking the truth, soothed only by the warmth and sweetness of a churro. "You should've seen Mahina when we were at the Dugtrio ring toss earlier. She got so mad at the rigging that she nearly terrorised those carnies into letting her win."

Nevertheless, he smiled at the offer. "Better spoiled than not, if you ask me," he mused, giving his own Espeon a loving scratch behind the ears. Duster had followed him into the darkness. Kiryu paid the final price. Even Watson was shaping up to be quite the warrior. But Vivi had been spared of it all.[break][break]

"Times are tough lately," he mused, voice taking on a somber tone. "Makes it all the more important for us to ne good to each other."[break][break]

Sometimes, that entailed stopping scammers in their tracks. Isaac snickered at the idea of Emmett's Umbreon calling shenanigans on a carny that got a little too greedy for their own good. "That nose for BS could come in handy someday, y'know."[break][break]

Not now, though. Not when he only had a nose for churros. Isaac handed his order out to his team, smiling softly as each took some to eat. He, himself, hadn't ordered any. Between his impending mission and ceetain lessons in progress, he hadn't been very hungry lately.[break][break]

"Name's Isaac, by the way. Good to meet you."

Ah, that tone he's heard time and time again from the people around him. They've been through things, things that he probably wouldn't fully understand unless he experienced it for himself. But he cannot discount his own life experiences from that alone, and he will not pry any further into a topic that has its doors closed.[break][break]

"Mahina's definitely saved my ass more times than I could ever count." Not even a compliment will spare him from a sharp whack on his shin, a glare shot towards the Umbreon as she huffs. "But it's a problem when it's my BS she's calling out."[break][break]

All the paperwork he had left for tomorrow... would he ever get it done? Probably, if Mahina really chose to get on his case. But that really was something for future him to worry about.[break][break]

"Emmett." He exchanges with a smile, sharp expressions quickly wiped away with the flow of conversation. His eyes flit over the distribution of snacks, curiosity left hungry as he gestures vaguely to the now empty carton. "Not quite a fan of churros yourself? Not that there's anything wrong with that."[break][break]

It's like how he doesn't particularly enjoy cotton candy, or Magikarp fishing with all that gurgling and splashing. Sometimes, it's just a preference thing.

It'd be the world's most expensive trip to the buffet hall. It'd also probably need them to rent out the whole building. When the hell did Team Isaac get so big?[break][break]

Apparently, Mahina was a tsundere about her own praise, giving her trainer a whack in the shins for his words. Luckily, Isaac was safely out of thwacking range, and he preferred it that way. "Shame about that. What's life without whipping up a little bit of BS now and then?"[break][break]

It was less fun when his own BS was called out. Isaac shrugged at the mention of churros, doing his best to look and act chill. "Nah. Churros are great. But I filled up before I showed up today," he said. It wasn't entirely a lie. Chu-e Choi would spend August seeing to it that he was eating well. "Can't just go spending all my hard earned cash here, yeah?"

Ah yes, the whole issue of carnival's being heavily overpriced and stuff like that. If he weren't still mulling over the whole issue of being nominated for a promotion, he might just have made a joke about a ranger's pay being barely enough to afford their day here.[break][break]

"No, yeah. I see what you mean. Save it for that buffet bill." He defers to a much milder one, watching as Mahina snatches the churro carton from his loosened grip. And she'll trot over to share it with Na'au, giving Eve a very obvious glare.[break][break]

"Be nice." With things just moments away from a horrible scuffle, he finds no better time to slip the Umbreon a warning. To which she huffs, turning away from the Eevee with heavy stomps. "So what about those games? Spent any trying to snag a prize? I heard the mechanical Tauros booth's kinda out of commission cos it... ran off?"[break][break]

He still doesn't know if he's meant to believe that phrasing.

[attr="class","skullbody"]With what food currently meant for Isaac, the idea of going to a buffet was on par with being tortured by knifes. He respected Emmett's attempt either way, though.[break][break]

The time to eat had passed. The Umbreon of the group made that fact very clear, glaring Eve's way to ensure the little Eevee didn't try anything. Noticing her glare, Ivan and Evan raised their hackles, the two punchier Eevees of the group not taking kindly to the baby of the bunch getting glared at. However, before the two could try anything, Vivi set a tail on each of their shoulders. It was enough to settle them down, at least.[break][break]

Food wasn't really on the table, but games had been a lot more Isaac's speed lately. They were cheap. They were clever. They didn't send Isaac's guts into a tailspin every time he tried one. Also, they got prizes for his team, and his team liked it when they got nice things to call their own.[break][break]

"Love trying my hand at 'em," Isaac said, a little grin on his face. "Pretty sure they're all different in each city, too. So if you think a game's too easy, just hop towns and hoo boy are you in for a surprise."[break][break]

That said, he wasn't the only one. Isaac did a little double take at what Emmett just said. "Wait, you said the Mechanical Tauros just ran off? Like, with its legs?" And its free will? Which robots didn't have?[break][break]

"Oh, really? Haven't really followed the fair through towns." He parses this new bit of information, a free hand offering Mahina a reassuring pat as she grouches over the near-confrontation. "Always get called for some kind of duty even though I've booked in my leaves."[break][break]

If only a certain Umbreon hadn't messed with the office schedule. And that said Umbreon pulls away from his touch, grunting at Na'au to follow as she stalks away with a mouthful of notes.[break][break]

"And yeah, I heard it from the carnies. Some maniac got on the ride and somehow made it come alive. Then it apparently crashed out of the ring and blew up. Whack."[break][break]

A yell quite nearly interrupts him, his attention drawn towards the source of the noise. And he doesn't even try to feign shock when he realises it's Mahina busy bullying another carny yet again. This time, it's over mere balloon pokemon: something about the Sylveon ones just don't seem to make her happy as she barks at them.[break][break]

Until then, it was just business as usual in the Hoenn region. A possessed piece of carnival equipment taking itself on a joyride shouldn't have been business as usual, but fuck it. Maybe they should have paid more attention to their teams and less attention to the exploding carnival equipment. Apparently Mahina's reign of terror had yet to come to an end, and she'd slipped off to keep giving more of the Joyland staff a difficult time. "Damn, you weren't kidding about a rebellious phase," he said, watching as Emmett tried to pull her away from the poor staff.[break][break]

And he'll quickly shoo them away, not quite bothering to grab the pokemon balloon lest it upset the Umbreon any further.[break][break]

[attr="class","skullbody"]There were two potential reasons behind this spoiled little princess' rebellion. Either she was longing for a home she was forced to leave, or she was reacting poorly to her sister's evolution.[break][break]

Homesickness was an understandable reason, but also a hard one to work around. She missed Alola. She wasn't at Alola anymore. There were steps to help her cope, but they were just that; steps. Ultimately, it would be up to Mahina to change her mindset and Emmett to help her along the way.[break][break]

Jealousy was far more compelling.[break][break]

Eevee were Pokemon strongly in tune with emotion, both their own and their trainer's. Umbreon was one of those, an evolution coming from a strong bond of friendship. Sylveon was another, coming not just from friendship but from love. Did Mahina fear that Na'au's evolution threatened her own bond with her trainer?[break][break]

"Maybe you two should go on an adventure together." It was a simple observation, and one easy enough for a Ranger on the job. "Show her, even if she's got a sister now, she's always gonna be your princess."[break][break]

Isaac knew all too well what it was like to be replaced with a sibling.
